Bio
Jay Moe, born Juma Mohamed Mchopanga is a cornerstone of East African music and a pioneer of the Bongo Flava movement in Tanzania. Emerging in the late 1990s as a member of the influential group Wateule, he quickly distinguished himself through his intricate storytelling and sophisticated Swahili wordplay. His 2002 solo debut, Ulimwengu Ndiyo Mama, remains a landmark in African hip-hop, featuring the classic hit "Mvua na Jua." Unlike many of his contemporaries who mimicked American styles, Jay Moe localized the genre, using his platform to address social inequality, poverty, and urban life in Dar es Salaam. Beyond the recording studio, he played a pivotal role in the birth of the Tanzanian film industry by starring in the movie Girlfriend. Today, he is respected as a "Grandmaster" of the scene, continuing to release music under his label, So Famous Entertainment, and bridging the gap between hip-hop’s golden age and the modern era.
