Jimmy Katumba was a celebrated Ugandan musician known for his deep baritone voice and genre-blending artistry. Born into a devout Christian family, he began singing in church at age eight and later joined the "Eschatos Bride Choir" as a student at Buloba Primary Teachers’ College in the 1970s. This marked the beginning of a remarkable career that merged gospel, soul, and Afro-pop. In 1975, he founded "The Light Bearers," which evolved into "Jimmy Katumba and The Ebonies," a group that became a cultural force in the 1980s and 1990s. Signature songs like "Twali Twagalana" and "Drums of Africa" earned him the nickname “the Black Jim Reeves.” Katumba moved abroad in the 1990s, recorded "Beyond the Sunset" in Nashville, and returned to Uganda in 1995. He passed away in 2006 but remains an iconic figure in Ugandan music, celebrated for his voice, stage presence, and lasting legacy.
