BioJosé Ernesto Hermida Dean has spent decades shaping the sound of modern Cuban music from behind the strings, whether on contrabass, bass guitar, or guitar. A graduate of the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory in 1985, he has built a career marked by versatility, precision, and deep musicality.
Known professionally as José Hermida, he has played and recorded with landmark Cuban ensembles such as Emiliano Salvador & Quintet, Bobby Carcassés & Afrojazz, Grupo Afrocuba, and Alexis Bosch & Proyecto Jazz Cubano. His reach, however, stretches far beyond Cuba. Onstage, he has collaborated with legends like Carlos Santana, Tito Puente, Wynton Marsalis, Rosa Passos, and Arturo O’Farrill, among many others, across continents and genres.
With more than 20 album credits and a strong international teaching presence, Hermida balances his career with his current role as an educator at both the National Art School (ENA) and his alma mater, Amadeo Roldán.
