Freshlyground is a South African Afro-fusion band that was formed in Cape Town in 2002. The band is known for its eclectic sound that combines elements of South African traditional music, jazz, blues, and indie rock.
Freshlyground's music often features a mix of languages, including English, Xhosa, Zulu, and French, and their lyrics often address social and political issues such as poverty, inequality, and corruption. The band has released several albums, including "Nomvula," "Ma' Cheri," and "Radio Africa," and has won numerous awards, including several South African Music Awards.
Freshlyground collaborated with Colombian pop star Shakira on the official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)."
Freshlyground faced controversy in 2010 when they were banned from performing in Zimbabwe after a music video depicting then Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe, in a negative light.
