BioToots & The Maytals was the celebrated Jamaican vocal group led by Frederick Nathaniel “Toots” Hibbert. Formed in Kingston in the early 1960s, the group became one of the foundational acts of ska, rocksteady, and reggae, helping introduce Jamaican music to international audiences. The ensemble operated as Toots & The Maytals from 1972 until Hibbert died in 2020 and later continued as The Maytals.
Their music drew on reggae, ska, rocksteady, gospel, soul, and R&B traditions. Notable releases include “Toots Reggae Live Sessions,” “Toots & The Maytals Reggae Live Sessions,” “Toots & The Maytals Live @ Reggae Sunsplash 1982,” “Sunny, Sunny (Captain Planet Remix),” and “Sunny Dub.” The group remained active through 2024, maintaining a strong presence in Jamaican music. Toots & The Maytals won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album for “True Love” in 2005 and “Got to Be Tough” in 2021.
