African musicians portray distinct vocal qualities and musical styles that make them different from their contemporaries from other cultures. These distinctions are largely influenced by several factors such as culture, genetics, and religion, to mention a few.

These vocal qualities and musical styles are guided by vibrant, diverse vocal techniques, reflecting the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the continent's many ethnic groups. These techniques often involve intricate rhythmic patterns, unique vocal qualities, and expressive gestures that convey deep emotions and cultural meanings.

One common vocal technique in African music is Call-and-Response. This technique involves a leader singing or playing a phrase, followed by a group responding with a similar or complementary phrase. It fosters a sense of community and participation among the singing group and the audience while reinforcing the rhythmic structure of the music. The call-and-response technique is prominent in some genres such as Ghanaian or Nigerian Highlife, African folklore, Senegalese Mbalax, South Africa's Isicathamiya, Nigeria's Afrobeat, Congolese Soukous, Algerian Raï, and many others. Examples of songs that feature this call-and-response technique include Ladysmith Black Mambazo & Oliver Mtukudzi's - Hello My Baby, E. T. Mensah's Yabomisa, Khaled's Sahra, and Fela Kuti's International Thief Thief.

Another vocal technique is polyrhythms. Although polyrhythms are a hallmark of African music, they can also be found in other musical styles such as pop, classical, rock, and jazz. This technique involves playing two or more rhythms simultaneously at the same tempo, forming complex structures. Vocal Ornamentation is another technique. Here, the singers employ various ornamental techniques to enhance expressiveness. These can include vibrato, trills, slides, and other embellishments used to convey emotions, emphasize key moments, or create aesthetic appeal. The vocal techniques in African music cannot be discussed without acknowledging the regional variations. In North Africa, the music is heavily influenced by Arabic music, characterized by intricate melismas and quarter-tone intervals. For instance, Algerian Raï combines Arabic and romantic languages in its lyrics.

In the West African region, there is a strong emphasis on storytelling and historical narration through song, which is known as griot traditions. Storytelling plays a significant role in various African genres such as Ghanaian Highlife, Nigerian Afro Juju & Apala, and Tishoumaren music of the Tuareg people.

In East African music, pastoral singing styles are prominent, often incorporating harmonies and rhythms inspired by cattle-herding cultures. Complex polyphonic singing is common in Central Africa, South Africa, and Swaziland. In Southern Africa, choral traditions blend indigenous styles with European influences. The Ladysmith Black Mambazo, ZimPraise, Soweto Spiritual Singers, Maseru Choral Group, Swazi Gospel singer, and many others are great examples.

Also, these African vocal techniques have cultural significance because they are deeply rooted in cultural traditions and beliefs. They are used for the preservation of the oral history of the people, expression of spiritual beliefs, fostering community bonds, and marking life milestone events such as coronation, birth, death, and passage rites marking major life.  The Zulu song "Shosholoza," originally a work song, has become a symbol of South African unity. It demonstrates how vocal techniques can carry profound cultural and historical significance.

Without a doubt, these vocal techniques have had a profound impact on global music. From the call-and-response in Jazz and Blues to the polyrhythms in Hip-Hop and Rap, or vocal ornamentation in Pop Music & reggae, these techniques have blended in to form unique sounds.

African vocal techniques truly offer a window into Africa's rich musical heritage and cultural diversity, as they reveal various ways African peoples have used music to express themselves, connect with their communities, and celebrate their identities.
