Across the savannas and Sahel grasslands of West and Central Africa, a lone figure on horseback watches over a herd of long-horned Zebu cattle as the sun settles across the horizon. It is an image that has endured for centuries and one that has come to represent the Fulani, among the most historically significant and widely dispersed peoples on the African continent.

The Fulani, also known as the Fula, Fulbe, Peul, or Peuhl depending on the country and language, are estimated to number between 35 and 40 million people spread across more than 20 African nations. From Senegal in the west to Sudan and the Central African Republic in the east, they form one of the largest and most geographically widespread ethnic groups in Africa.

Their origins remain debated. Some theories connect them to North African Berber populations, while others point to ancient populations of the Sahara before desertification transformed the region. Linguistic and genetic studies more commonly trace Fulani roots to the Senegambia region around present-day Senegal and The Gambia, where communities may have existed as early as 1000 BCE.

What defines Fulani history as much as origin is movement. Over centuries, Fulani groups migrated gradually eastward with their cattle herds in search of pasture, water, and trade opportunities. This steady expansion carried them across the African savanna belt where they negotiated with kingdoms, participated in regional trade networks, and in some cases established states of their own.

Cattle sit at the center of traditional Fulani life. Among pastoral groups such as the Mbororo, livestock shaped not only the economy but also social identity and spiritual values. Zebu cattle, well adapted to dry savanna climates, became symbols of wealth, status, inheritance, and continuity between generations.

Many Fulani pastoralists still practice transhumance, the seasonal movement of herds across grazing routes. During dry periods, herders move southward in search of pasture and water before returning north with the rains. Over generations, this movement produced a deep knowledge of landscape, grazing cycles, and water systems that continues to attract attention from researchers studying sustainable pastoralism and ecological adaptation.

The image of the Fulani as nomadic herders, however, tells only part of the story. From the 17th century onward, settled Fulani communities became increasingly influential within Islamic scholarship across West Africa. As Islam spread through trade routes and urban centers, Fulani clerics, teachers, and scholars emerged as important intellectual figures in the region.

This religious and political influence culminated in the Fulani jihads of the 18th and 19th centuries. The most prominent was led by Usman dan Fodio, the Islamic scholar and reformer who launched a jihad against the Hausa states in 1804. The movement led to the creation of the Sokoto Caliphate, which became one of the largest political entities in Africa at the time. Its influence continues to shape northern Nigeria, where the Sultan of Sokoto remains one of the country’s most respected traditional authorities.

Fulani-led states also emerged elsewhere across the region, including the Macina Empire in present-day Mali and the Islamic states of Futa Toro and Futa Jallon in Senegambia. These were not simply military expansions. They developed administrative systems, centers of learning, courts, and networks of governance that played important roles in the political history of West Africa.

Fulani cultural traditions remain visible across the region today. Fulani women are particularly recognised for distinctive jewelry traditions, including large gold hoop earrings known as kwottenai kanye. Amber beads, silver ornaments, decorated calabashes, and embroidered robes continue to mark Fulani aesthetics across different communities.

The traditional Fulani hat, with its conical shape and leather detailing, has become one of the most recognizable symbols associated with the culture. Music also remains central to social life. Instruments such as the hoddu, a stringed lute related to the kora, accompany oral traditions preserved by praise singers and griots who carry histories, genealogies, and communal memory through performance.

In recent decades, Fulani communities across West and Central Africa have faced mounting pressures. Climate change and desertification continue to reduce grazing land across the Sahel, forcing herders further south into areas occupied by farming communities. Competition over land and water has contributed to violent conflicts in countries such as Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Cameroon.

At the same time, Fulani communities are often drawn into wider political tensions, displaced by insecurity, or affected by rapid urbanization and economic change. Younger generations increasingly navigate the tension between pastoral traditions and modern urban life.

Yet Fulani identity continues to endure across borders and generations. Their language, Fulfulde, remains one of the most widely spoken languages in Africa, while the cultural code known as Pulaaku still shapes ideas around dignity, discipline, and community. Across cities such as Dakar, Lagos, Abuja, and Bamako, Fulani professionals, artists, scholars, and political figures continue to carry that heritage into new spaces.

The Fulani story is ultimately one of continuity through movement. Across centuries of migration, political change, environmental pressure, and shifting borders, they have maintained a shared cultural identity that remains recognizable across much of Africa. In many ways, their history reflects a broader truth about identity on the continent. Belonging is not always tied to a single place. Sometimes it travels through language, memory, values, and the enduring rhythms of everyday life.
