In Southern Africa, the Shona people of Zimbabwe use the mbira, often called the “thumb piano,” in Bira ceremonies meant to communicate with ancestral spirits. The repetitive, hypnotic melodies of the instrument are believed to invite the presence of ancestors into the gathering. Among the Zulu of South Africa, music and dance remain central to ceremonies honoring lineage and communal memory, while in East Africa, spirit possession ceremonies among Swahili communities often rely on rhythmic drumming and chanting to connect participants with unseen spiritual forces.

The late Nigerian writer and poet Chinua Achebe captured this worldview powerfully in Things Fall Apart. In the novel, ancestors are central to community life, morality, and order. They are consulted, feared, and respected. Their voices echo through proverbs, rituals, and ceremonies, reminding the living that they are part of a continuum rather than isolated individuals. Achebe’s work reflects a broader African philosophy: life does not simply end with death; it transforms.

As Africa continues to celebrate its departed elders, one of the most enduring ways it does so is through music. Drums announce ancestral presence. Songs recount heroic deeds and family histories. Dances reenact journeys between worlds. In many communities, certain rhythms are reserved exclusively for funerals, memorial rites, or sacred festivals because they are believed to summon spirits or guide them safely onward. The Fulani, also known as the Fula, Fulbe, Peul, or Peuhl depending on the country and language, are estimated to number between 35 and 40 million people spread across more than 20 African nations. From Senegal in the west to Sudan and the Central African Republic in the east, they form one of the largest and most geographically widespread ethnic groups in Africa.

Their origins remain debated. Some theories connect them to North African Berber populations, while others point to ancient populations of the Sahara before desertification transformed the region. Linguistic and genetic studies more commonly trace Fulani roots to the Senegambia region around present-day Senegal and The Gambia, where communities may have existed as early as 1000 BCE.

What defines Fulani history as much as origin is movement. Over centuries, Fulani groups migrated gradually eastward with their cattle herds in search of pasture, water, and trade opportunities. This steady expansion carried them across the African savanna belt where they negotiated with kingdoms, participated in regional trade networks, and in some cases established states of their own.

Cattle sit at the center of traditional Fulani life. Among pastoral groups such as the Mbororo, livestock shaped not only the economy but also social identity and spiritual values. Zebu cattle, well adapted to dry savanna climates, became symbols of wealth, status, inheritance, and continuity between generations.

Many Fulani pastoralists still practice transhumance, the seasonal movement of herds across grazing routes. During dry periods, herders move southward in search of pasture and water before returning north with the rains. Over generations, this movement produced a deep knowledge of landscape, grazing cycles, and water systems that continues to attract attention from researchers studying sustainable pastoralism and ecological adaptation.

The image of the Fulani as nomadic herders, however, tells only part of the story. From the 17th century onward, settled Fulani communities became increasingly influential within Islamic scholarship across West Africa. As Islam spread through trade routes and urban centers, Fulani clerics, teachers, and scholars emerged as important intellectual figures in the region.

This religious and political influence culminated in the Fulani jihads of the 18th and 19th centuries. The most prominent was led by Usman dan Fodio, the Islamic scholar and reformer who launched a jihad against the Hausa states in 1804. The movement led to the creation of the Sokoto Caliphate, which became one of the largest political entities in Africa at the time. Its influence continues to shape northern Nigeria, where the Sultan of Sokoto remains one of the country’s most respected traditional authorities.

Fulani-led states also emerged elsewhere across the region, including the Macina Empire in present-day Mali and the Islamic states of Futa Toro and Futa Jallon in Senegambia. These were not simply military expansions. They developed administrative systems, centers of learning, courts, and networks of governance that played important roles in the political history of West Africa.

Fulani cultural traditions remain visible across the region today. Fulani women are particularly recognised for distinctive jewelry traditions, including large gold hoop earrings known as kwottenai kanye. Amber beads, silver ornaments, decorated calabashes, and embroidered robes continue to mark Fulani aesthetics across different communities.

The traditional Fulani hat, with its conical shape and leather detailing, has become one of the most recognizable symbols associated with the culture. Music also remains central to social life. Instruments such as the hoddu, a stringed lute related to the kora, accompany oral traditions preserved by praise singers and griots who carry histories, genealogies, and communal memory through performance.

In recent decades, Fulani communities across West and Central Africa have faced mounting pressures. Climate change and desertification continue to reduce grazing land across the Sahel, forcing herders further south into areas occupied by farming communities. Competition over land and water has contributed to violent conflicts in countries such as Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Cameroon.

At the same time, Fulani communities are often drawn into wider political tensions, displaced by insecurity, or affected by rapid urbanization and economic change. Younger generations increasingly navigate the tension between pastoral traditions and modern urban life.

Yet Fulani identity continues to endure across borders and generations. Their language, Fulfulde, remains one of the most widely spoken languages in Africa, while the cultural code known as Pulaaku still shapes ideas around dignity, discipline, and community. Across cities such as Dakar, Lagos, Abuja, and Bamako, Fulani professionals, artists, scholars, and political figures continue to carry that heritage into new spaces.

The Fulani story is ultimately one of continuity through movement. Across centuries of migration, political change, environmental pressure, and shifting borders, they have maintained a shared cultural identity that remains recognizable across much of Africa. In many ways, their history reflects a broader truth about identity on the continent. Belonging is not always tied to a single place. Sometimes it travels through language, memory, values, and the enduring rhythms of everyday life.

There are a few genres in modern African music that have travelled as quickly, or as organically, as Amapiano. In less than a decade, it transitioned from taxis, townships, and informal lounges of Pretoria and Johannesburg to clubs in London, dance floors in Lagos, and festivals in New York City, spreading its influence on TikTok feeds worldwide, and it continues to grow.

But unlike many global genres shaped by major labels or corporate planning, Amapiano’s rise was deeply communal. It grew from DJs sharing files over Bluetooth, from underground mixes passed around on WhatsApp groups, from local dance cultures, and from young South Africans building a new sound out of the country’s long musical history.

The word “Amapiano” loosely translates from isiZulu as “the pianos,” a reference to the genre’s jazzy keyboard melodies and soft chord progressions.

But its roots stretch far beyond piano loops. To understand Amapiano properly, you have to begin with the evolution of South African dance music itself.

South Africa has long produced distinct electronic genres that emerged from township culture and post-apartheid youth movements. In the 1990s and early 2000s, Kwaito became the defining sound of urban South African youth. Slow, bass-heavy and deeply local, Kwaito fused house music with township slang, local rhythms and political freedom. Artists like Mandoza, Zola 7, and TKZee shaped a generation. Kwaito was more than music; it was identity, language, statement, and attitude after apartheid.

As electronic music evolved globally, South Africa developed new local variants. One of them was Bacardi House, a raw township house sound associated with DIY production and heavy percussion. Another was Deep House, which became hugely influential in South African nightlife. Around the early 2010s, producers in Gauteng province began experimenting with slower BPMs, jazzier melodies, atmospheric pads, and thick log drums. That fusion slowly became Amapiano.

Unlike genres with a clear founding moment, Amapiano emerged gradually. There is still debate over who pioneered it. Some credit producers and DJs from Pretoria, such as Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa, for refining and popularizing the sound. Others point to underground producers in townships around Gauteng who were experimenting with similar textures years earlier. What is clear is that by the mid-2010s, the sound had become impossible to ignore.

One reason Amapiano spread so quickly was its distribution culture.

Before DSP playlists fully embraced the genre, long DJ mixes circulated informally through taxis, street vendors, Bluetooth transfers, and file-sharing apps. South African youth culture played a major role in breaking records before radio ever did. Around them, artists like Focalistic, Sha Sha, Young Stunna, and Uncle Waffles helped turn the genre into a continental movement.

Amapiano also arrived at a unique moment in African music history. While Afrobeats was expanding globally through radio-friendly singles and streaming platforms, Amapiano offered something different: groove, atmosphere, and communal rhythm. Songs often stretched beyond six minutes. The emphasis was not always on verses or hooks, but on feeling. Log drums became central to the genre’s identity, creating a low-frequency bounce that immediately distinguished Amapiano from other dance music around the world.

By the early 2020s, the genre had become one of Africa’s biggest cultural exports. Nigerian artists, such as Mayorkun and Zinoleesky, incorporated Amapiano rhythms into pop records. Artists from East Africa, the UK, and even the United States experimented with the sound. Major festivals, such as Afro Nation (Portugal) and Piano Invasion (Italy), booked Amapiano DJs alongside global electronic acts. Dance challenges accelerated its reach even further. Yet even with global success, the genre retained much of its township DNA. Many of its biggest songs still feel rooted in collective experience: nightlife, street culture, local slang, dance circles, and communal celebration.

Like every successful genre, Amapiano now faces questions about evolution and commercialization. Some fans argue the sound has become too polished or too pop-oriented. Others see its flexibility as its greatest strength. Substyles continue to emerge, from private school piano to S’gija and other more soulful and jazz-influenced variants. Producers keep stretching the boundaries, blending Amapiano with Afrobeats, gospel, Afro-house, and hip-hop.

What remains undeniable is its cultural significance. Amapiano represents another chapter in Africa shaping global music on its own terms, without waiting for validation from outside markets first. It is part of a much longer lineage of African innovation in dance music, one built from local communities outward rather than from industry boardrooms downward.

And perhaps that is why the genre resonates so widely. Beneath the log drums, the chants, and the piano melodies is something deeply familiar: people gathering together to move, release, celebrate, and create culture in real time.

Because data, in today’s music economy, is leverage.

Every selection, every stream, every skip, and every playlist add feeds a system that decides what gets pushed next. It shapes touring decisions, brand partnerships, market positioning, and release strategies. In more mature markets, this data flows back. Labels, distributors, and artists use it to refine their approach, negotiate better deals, and build long-term careers. But across much of Africa, that loop seems still incomplete.

Every selection, every stream, every skip, and every playlist add feeds a system that decides what gets pushed next.

Our artists are visible globally, but often blind locally.

The platforms have the numbers. The DSPs understand listener behavior in granular detail. They know where fans are, how they discover music, and what they move on from. But that insight rarely translates into actionable intelligence for the artists themselves, especially at the mid-tier and emerging levels. What you get instead are surface metrics like streams, followers, fans, and playlist placements. Useful, but not enough to build strategy.

Without strategy, growth becomes reactive.

You see it in how releases are timed, how markets are approached, how success is measured. There is a tendency to chase what appears to be working globally, rather than fully understanding why it works and how to replicate or adapt it locally. The result is a cycle where visibility increases, but leverage does not.

This is where the next phase of the African music industry will be decided, not by who gets the biggest song, but by who controls the best information.

Artists, managers, and local companies need to start treating data as a core asset, not a byproduct. That means investing in analytics, asking harder questions of platforms, and building independent intelligence layers that sit alongside global systems.

Because the artists who win the next decade will not just understand music.

They will understand the numbers behind it, and more importantly, how to use them.

The issue isn’t personalization itself; rather, it’s when personalization becomes an endless tunnel. African music is too vast, too layered, too historical to be reduced to a single sound loop. If Afrobeats is all you hear, you are missing entire worlds. Mbalax from Senegal, Desert Blues from the Sahel, Ethio Jazz from Addis Ababa, Kwassa Kwassa from the Congo, Chimurenga from Zimbabwe, Mbaqanga from South Africa, and many more sounds that shaped the continent long before algorithms learned our names.

Personalization primarily rewards familiarity rather than curiosity. While it does prioritize comfort, it does not necessarily encourage discoveries. Over time, it then narrows taste instead of expanding it. The listener thinks they are choosing freely, but the system is choosing on their behalf, reinforcing what is already known.

So what is the way out for African music lovers?

Take Dunsin Oyekan, whose songs rarely feel rushed. His average track stretches between eight and twelve minutes. Live recordings often go even longer. When God Walks In clocks in at 12:58. The Code of Worship sits at 11:34. These are not just songs. They are experiences unfolding in real time.

On the extreme end of brevity is You Suffer by Napalm Death. At just 1.316 seconds, it holds the Guinness World Record for the shortest recorded song. Blink, and you miss it.

Historically, technology shaped length. In the 1990s, the average song had a duration of approximately 4 minutes and 14 seconds. By the 2020s, that dropped to roughly 3 minutes and 15 seconds. Vinyl imposed limits. Radio demanded structure. CDs allowed more freedom. Now, streaming platforms reward repeat plays and quick retention. A shorter song increases the likelihood of completion and replay. The algorithm has become a silent co-producer.

But numbers alone don’t tell the full story.

In African music, duration is often tied to function. Call-and-response is not just a technique. It is participation. The lead sings or chants, the chorus responds, and the audience joins. The song breathes. It stretches. It fills. It expands to accommodate the community.

Highlife, Juju, Fuji, Gospel, Amapiano — many African genres lean into repetition and groove. A phrase cycles. The rhythm locks in. The crowd responds. Energy builds gradually. The “length” is not filler. It is immersion.

In worship settings, extended songs create room for reflection and spontaneity. In traditional ceremonies, songs can last as long as the ritual requires. In dance-driven genres, repetition is what sustains movement. A three-minute cut might satisfy radio, but a ten-minute version sustains the dance floor.

At the same time, attention spans are shifting. Social media clips shape expectations. Hooks arrive earlier. Bridges are shorter. Some artists now write with the first 30 seconds in mind. The skip button is unforgiving.

Yet we still see long-form success. Think of how certain live performances trend because they feel expansive. Or how remixes extend a track’s lifespan far beyond its original runtime. Length, when intentional, can deepen impact.

So perhaps the better question is not: Does duration matter? But what is the song trying to do?

If it is built for radio rotation, brevity works.

If it is built for worship, community, or the dance floor, time becomes part of the instrument.

If it is built for streaming economics, the structure bends toward completion rates.

As digital content managers and cultural curators, we must understand this tension. The platform influences the format. The culture influences the experience. The artist negotiates both.

It is strategy. It is culture. It is intention.

And sometimes, it is the difference between a song you consume and a song you enter.

These migrations did not only create Yoruba communities outside of their original home in Ile-Ife, but they also had a big impact on how people spoke, especially in terms of tone, pronunciation, and speech patterns.

In the beginning, Yoruba migration was mostly slow and planned. Groups left Ile-Ife, which is thought to be the spiritual and historical home of the Yoruba, to set up new settlements and kingdoms. Kétou was one of the most important of these. It became a major center of Yoruba life in what is now Benin. This growth was closely related to the rise of the Oyo Empire, which ruled most of the area from the 17th to the 18th centuries. Oyo expanded Yoruba influence westward into Benin through trade, military organization, and political control. This made sure that Yoruba language and culture were well established in the area long before the 19th century. But in the late 1700s and early 1800s, Yoruba migration changed a lot because of wars and political instability. The Oyo Empire fell apart because of fights between its own people, problems with succession, and outside forces. This caused a lot of chaos in Yorubaland. This time, which is often linked to the larger Yoruba Wars, led to a breakdown of political power and more danger. Many people moved across borders into nearby areas, including parts of what is now Benin, in search of safety.

The Kingdom of Dahomey also became a strong and expansionist state at the same time. Dahomey launched a number of military campaigns into nearby areas, including Yoruba-speaking areas, after breaking free from Oyo's rule. Border kingdoms like Kétou were attacked many times, and in 1886, Kétou was taken over, which caused death, destruction, and the displacement of its people. These fights were often violent and were partly caused by the demand for slaves during the time of the transatlantic slave trade. Because of this, a lot of Yoruba people had to run away, move, or were caught and spread out.

These wars and political upheavals were very important in shaping how people moved around. Yoruba communities had already been established in Benin through earlier expansion. However, the conflicts of the 1800s made movement more common, which led to the spread of Yoruba people across larger parts of West Africa. Refugees moved to new places, often living with people from other ethnic groups. This made areas where languages and cultures mixed. Changes in language and intonation can be understood in the context of migration and contact. Yoruba is a tonal language, which means that changes in pitch are important for understanding. When Yoruba speakers moved to places where other languages were spoken, like Fon and related Gbe languages, they began to interact with those languages over time, which caused changes in pronunciation and tone. Bilingualism became common, and people often used the same intonation patterns in both languages. Over time, this led to different regional versions of Yoruba, especially in Benin, where tone realization, rhythm, and accent may be a little different from what they are in southwestern Nigeria.

The migration of Yoruba people throughout West Africa, particularly into Benin and adjacent areas, significantly impacted settlement patterns and linguistic structures, while profoundly influencing cultural expression, especially in music, religious practices, and instrumental communication. Yoruba is a tonal language, which means that pitch changes can change the meaning of a word. Because of this, migration naturally caused differences in pronunciation and sound patterns in different regions. These differences led to small cultural differences between Yoruba communities in Nigeria and those in Benin (Anago) and other parts of West Africa over time. It changed how people express their religion. Yoruba belief systems, especially those related to Orisha worship, depend on music, chant, and rhythm a lot for spiritual communication. In Benin, where Yoruba communities were close to Fon Vodun traditions, there was some religious exchange and development that happened at the same time. The main Yoruba beliefs stayed the same, but musical invocations and ritual rhythms sometimes picked up local styles, which made performance practice different but kept the spiritual meaning.

Music and oral performance traditions have had one of the biggest effects on culture. Tone and rhythm are closely linked in Yoruba music systems, which is why they are so closely related to language. Instruments like the talking drum (dùndún) are made to sound like speech by imitating its tonal structure. Studies have demonstrated that Yoruba drumming systems can faithfully replicate the tonal contours of spoken language, rendering drums a medium of linguistic communication as well as musical expression.

In Yoruba communities in the diaspora, like those in Benin, musical styles often show how they interact with other languages, like Fon and Gbe. This interaction changed how rhythms were understood and how they were played, even though the basic tonal logic of Yoruba stayed the same. Because of this, Yoruba music in Benin sometimes has different tempos, vocal emphasis, and rhythmic phrasing than Yoruba music in southwestern Nigeria. These differences do not signify a loss of culture; instead, they represent an adaptation of a shared tradition within novel linguistic contexts.

These variations in music and instrumentation show how Yoruba culture modifies itself without losing its essence. Even with migration and contact with other cultures of West Africa bringing in new influences, the tonal basis of Yoruba expression ensured continuity across borders. Thus, music was not only a form of entertainment but a living archive of language, identity, and historical movement.

Right now, the world is paying attention to Afrobeats and Amapiano. New audiences, new markets, new opportunities. But alongside that growth, a familiar conversation is resurfacing: what constitutes “authentic” African music?

It’s not a new question, but it’s one that often forgets history.

African music didn’t become global overnight; it has been travelling for centuries. Take Highlife, for example. It originated from a blend of local rhythms and Western instruments during the colonial era, and that blend is what gave it identity. During the Transatlantic Slave Trade, African rhythms crossed the ocean and found new homes. In the Caribbean, these rhythms became the foundation of both religious and secular music, while in the United States, they evolved into genres such as Jazz and Blues. In Central Africa, Congolese Rumba and Soukous drew from Cuban sounds, which already had African roots. In Tanzania, Bongo Flava built on American hip-hop and R&B, fused with local elements. Meanwhile, across North Africa and Spain, musical exchange led to Andalusian classical music.

This is the pattern. Movement. Exchange. Reinvention.

When people talk about gatekeeping, it often comes from a place of wanting to protect culture. That intention is valid. However, protection can easily turn into restriction. Questions like “Is Afrobeats too global?”, “Is Amapiano too influenced by house and jazz?” or “Is Bongo Flava too Western?” highlight this tension. If we’re honest, these same questions could have been asked at every stage of African music history, and each time, they would have been misguided.

There’s a tendency to separate “traditional” from “modern,” as if one is more authentic than the other. But African music has always been built through influence and adaptation, allowing genres to evolve and thrive. Take Semba as an example. It originated from Massemba and was later influenced by genres like Kizomba, Kuduro, and Samba from Brazil.

There is also a challenge in claiming that African music is not evolving. Over time, we have seen clear patterns of influence and transformation. For instance, Ghanaian highlife music shaped sounds in Lagos during the 1970s and 1980s, which contributed to the rise of Igbo Highlife, now a distinct genre in its own right.

Maybe the position should not be gatekeeping. Instead, the focus should be on documenting and preserving original sounds, while allowing African music to do what it has always done, move.

Gatekeeping doesn’t protect African music. Documentation does. Credit does. Let the sound travel.

Gatekeeping African Music

Ask anyone about the origins of jazz, and you'll hear names like Louis Armstrong or Duke Ellington. But here's the real question: what if the true foundation of jazz wasn't built only in America, and wasn't built mainly by men? What if the rhythms, the soul, and the storytelling that define jazz were carried across generations by African women — women whose names were never recorded, never celebrated, and in many cases, never even remembered? Before jazz had a name, African women were already creating music through ritual, community, and survival. They preserved culture through voice, rhythm, and elements that would later become the heartbeat of jazz. I am challenging the history we've been taught, because if we ignore the role of African women, then we're not just missing a piece of the story — we are misunderstanding the entire foundation of the music itself.

Think of jazz as a musical conversation where the rules are flexible and the mistakes are often the best part. While most music follows a strict script, jazz is about freedom, rhythm, and the now. To define it simply, jazz is a genre that originated in African-American communities in New Orleans in the late 19th century, characterized by its swing feel and a heavy focus on improvisation. The standard history books will tell you that jazz was born in New Orleans around the turn of the 20th century. New Orleans was a melting pot port city where French, Spanish, African, and Caribbean cultures collided. In places like Congo Square, enslaved people were uniquely permitted to gather on Sundays to play music. This created a space where European brass instruments — trumpets and trombones — and marching band structures met the blues feeling of the Deep South. New Orleans provided the instruments. The logic of jazz, the way the music actually behaves, is fundamentally African. If you strip away the saxophones and pianos, you find a musical source code that existed centuries before the United States was founded.

That source code rests on three pillars that African music carried long before jazz had a name. The first is polyrhythm. In Western classical music, everyone follows one steady pulse. In African music, particularly from regions like West Africa's Gold Coast, musicians layer multiple rhythms on top of one another. Jazz did not invent complex swing; it simply adapted the African tradition of having the feet play one rhythm, the hands another, and the voice a third. This created the groove that defines jazz. The second pillar is call-and-response. In many African cultures, music is a communal dialogue, not a lecture. A leader would sing a phrase, and the community would answer. In jazz, when a saxophone calls and the piano responds, or when a singer scat-sings alongside a trumpet, they are practicing an ancient social ritual. This transforms the stage from a performance into a conversation. The third pillar is improvisation. Western music traditionally relied on a score, a written piece that told you exactly what to play. African musical traditions, however, valued the musician's ability to decorate, vary, and reinvent a melody in the moment. Jazz is famous for spontaneous creation, but this was not a new American idea. It was a continuation of the African value that individual expression is just as important as the collective song. When people say jazz is "American," they are talking about the location. When we look at the mechanics — the polyrhythms, the dialogue, and the improvisation — we see that jazz is actually African music surviving and thriving in a new environment.

The development of jazz cannot be fully understood without examining the movement of African people and their cultural practices across the Atlantic during the transatlantic slave trade. Although enslaved Africans were forcibly removed from their homelands, they carried with them deeply rooted musical traditions that could not be erased. In the Americas, these traditions adapted to new environments and experiences. Music became a vital means of survival, expression, and resistance. Enslaved Africans and their descendants created spirituals, work songs, and field hollers, which reflected both their suffering and resilience. These forms of music retained essential African elements such as improvisation and call-and-response structures. As time progressed, they evolved into the blues, a genre that directly influenced the emergence of jazz. Early blues artists, including Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, played a crucial role in shaping the sound.

At the center of this living tradition stood women whose contributions history has largely failed to honor. Miriam Makeba, widely known as Mama Africa, was a Grammy-winning singer and a global icon of civil rights. After rising to fame with the Manhattan Brothers, she was forced into a 30-year exile for her anti-apartheid stance, yet she continued to carry her music across the world. Her sound blended jazz, ragtime, and traditional South African melodies, bringing songs like "The Click Song" and "Pata Pata" to international audiences. Sathima Bea Benjamin, a world-class jazz vocalist and composer, carved her own distinct path when she and her husband, Abdullah Ibrahim, were discovered by Duke Ellington in Zurich. Her style drew deeply from American jazz standards while infusing the work with the unmistakable Cape Jazz sound and a longing for a homeland she had been separated from during her years in New York. Dolly Rathebe, South Africa's first black female film star and a pin-up icon of the 1950s, became a symbol of urban sophistication in Sophiatown, performing with the Elite Swingsters. Her sultry voice and charismatic screen presence in films like Jim Comes to Jo'burg cemented her as a legend of African jazz and blues. Thandi Klaasen, whose career spanned over five decades beginning in those same vibrant streets of Sophiatown, was known for her resilience and her distinctively gravelly voice. Scarred in an acid attack as a teenager, she refused to let her spirit be diminished, ultimately becoming a celebrated jazz singer and a recipient of the Order of Ikhamanga. Abigail Kubeka, mentored by Miriam Makeba herself, joined the famous Skylarks vocal group and spent over 60 years bridging traditional African jazz and cabaret with a sophistication that made her one of South Africa's most enduring entertainers. And Lira, born Lerato Molapo, represents the Afro-Soul evolution of that same tradition, melding powerful vocals with jazz arrangements and uplifting pop sensibilities across a multi-platinum career. Often referred to as the Beyoncé of Africa for her commanding stage presence, she became the first African artist to have a Barbie doll modeled in her likeness.

Despite their undeniable influence, African women's roles in early jazz were often minimized or erased entirely. Western narratives favored European and American perspectives, routinely ignoring African cultural contributions. The music industry and society at large privileged male musicians, treating women primarily as supporting performers rather than innovators. South African female jazz artists in particular faced restricted opportunities for public performance and global recognition. And because much of African women's music existed within oral traditions, their contributions were rarely captured in historical archives, leaving their legacies vulnerable to the silence of time.

Yet the silence does not change the truth. African women were not simply participants in early jazz — they were architects of its rhythms, melodies, and spiritual identity. From the communal music of ancient African tradition to the smoky stages of the early jazz scene, their voices shaped a global sound while they themselves faced systematic marginalization. To truly understand jazz, we must restore their names to the story where they have always belonged.

History handed us Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, but it quietly buried the women whose rhythms and voices formed the soul of music called jazz.

Hidden Voices: African Women Who Shaped Jazz And Blues

Traditional musical instruments have always been more than just tools for making sound, they are vital important parts of culture, identity, and history of a people. Drums, flutes, stringed harps and other traditional instruments were made from natural materials and shaped by the environment, belief systems, and the needs of the community. They carried stories and sounds from one generation to the next. The sounds they made were always tied to the situations in which they were played, like rituals, ceremonies, moral teachings, and celebrations. These instruments were originally made to be purely acoustic, using only physical vibrations like stretched skins, resonant wood, vibrating strings, and moving air. Their limitations in volume and projection were not flaws; they were defining features that shaped both performance and meaning.

But as music moved from small, private settings to bigger, more wider performance spaces, these limits became increasingly difficult to ignore. Traditional instruments, which were made for small spaces and direct interaction with people, had a hard time competing staying in concert halls, festivals, and modern recording studios. Musicians had a big problem to solve: how to keep these instruments' authenticity and expressive depth while making them work for today's needs. 

The change from purely acoustic instruments to electro-acoustic systems has been one of the significant developments most important changes in this process. This change is based on a simple but strong idea: to keep the instrument's originality while using technology to make it better. Musicians can turn physical vibrations into electrical signals by adding pickups, internal microphones, and amplification systems to traditional instruments. This lets the instruments be amplified, processed, and added to bigger sound environments without losing their basic sound. Piezo pickups, magnetic pickups, and internal microphones have completely changed how traditional instruments work in performance. Lutes, koras, violins, and different types of traditional drums can now be plugged directly into amplifiers and sound systems. Asake's symphonic concert performance is a clear example of this. Traditional percussionists, especially talking drummers, played with wireless microphones attached to their instruments along with other amplified percussion instruments. This setup made it possible for the talking drum's subtle tonal changes and speech-like qualities to be heard clearly in a large electronic and orchestral setting. The experience showed how electro-acoustic enhancement keeps the instrument's expressive character while also making it work well in a loud performance setting. Instead of being drowned out, the traditional instruments stayed clear and present, adding to the overall sound of the performance in a dynamic way. This makes it possible for them to be heard clearly in big spaces and work well with modern band arrangements. This transformation is important because it doesn't replace the acoustic sound; instead, it changes it into a form that can be shaped, controlled, and expanded.

When an instrument enters the electrical domain, it becomes part of a larger signal chain. This lets you use effects and digital processing to be more creative as musicians can change the way traditional timbres sound in new ways with tools like reverb, delay, distortion, and modulation. For example, a plucked string instrument can change from a dry, percussive sound to a layered, atmospheric texture. In this way, modernization isn't just about making things louder; it's also about changing the instrument's identity.

This change is clear in modern performance practices, where hybrid setups are becoming more and more common. Nowadays, synthesizers, drum machines, and digital audio workstations are often used in conjunction with traditional instruments to create performances that mix acoustic heritage with electronic innovation. In many African and global fusion genres, electronic rhythms and basslines are added to traditional instruments like the kora or balafon. This makes music that is both traditional and forward-looking. Instead of losing their cultural significance, these instruments are given new contexts, allowing them to speak new musical languages while still keeping their unique qualities.

This change is part of a bigger philosophical shift from preservation to evolution. Tradition has often been seen as something that should be kept in its original form, but in reality, musical practices have always changed from one generation to another. Over time, the materials, tunings, and playing styles change. Adding electro-acoustic technology is just the next step in this long process. It helps traditional instruments stay useful in today's world, reach new audiences, and be part of global music conversations.

The most radical changes that come with modernization happen in the digital world, not in the physical world. In the past, traditional instruments were only physical objects. Now, they exist as data. The sounds of these instruments are recorded, mapped, and shared as virtual instruments and plugins using sampling and digital modelling. This means that producers all over the world can use these sounds in their work, no matter where they are or what materials they have.

The fact that African instruments are available as plugins and sample libraries is both  a significant opportunity and a serious challenge  a chance and a difficult problem. It makes things a lot easier to get to and reach people all over the world. Producers can put the sounds of instruments like the kalimba, talking drum, or kora into many different types of music, from Afrobeats to film scores to electronic music. This has led to a greater understanding and appreciation of African  music sonic traditions, as well as new ways to be creative. But digitalizing these tools brings up important issues about authenticity, representation, and ownership. High-quality sample libraries can capture the tonal qualities of an instrument, but they often have trouble replicating the small differences that make live performance unique, such as microtonality, expressive timing, and cultural context. Also, the change from traditional sounds to digital goods makes us think about who owns these representations and how they are used.

Modern producers often take rhythms, textures, and phrases from old recordings and put them into new songs. This makes a musical language with layers, where the past is always being reinterpreted in the present. Tradition is no longer a fixed point of reference; it is now a source of new ideas. Digital technology doesn't just keep traditional instruments alive; it also changes how they are used in making music.

The modernization of traditional instruments, from their acoustic beginnings to electro-acoustic systems and digital representations, is best understood as a continuum rather than a process of replacement. Each stage builds on the one before it: acoustic instruments hold cultural value, electro-acoustic systems open up new ways to perform, and digital tools make creativity and access available to everyone. They all work together to create an ecosystem that is always changing, where old and new ideas can live side by side.

So the question isn't whether traditional instruments can still be used in a modern world, but how they will keep changing in that world. Musicians, producers, and communities who find the right balance between authenticity and experimentation being real and trying new things will shape their future. Tradition is not something that stays the same; it is something that is always being reimagined.

FROM RESONANCE TO ELECTRICITY: Reimagining Traditional Instruments in the Modern Age

The moment arrives quietly at first. People are seated, plates are filling, and greetings are still moving around the room. Someone adjusts the speakers, a guitar line slips into the air, and a talking drum answers. Within minutes, chairs begin to scrape the floor. Someone stands. Then another. A big auntie who has been composed since her arrival suddenly moves toward the centre of the room. The party has begun.

What makes an African party tick? Whether at home or in the diaspora, there is something unmistakable about it. At a Nigerian gathering, you cannot miss the aso-ebi, the party jollof rice, or the density of family and old friends sharing one space. But the real structure of the event is the music.

It is not background. It is architecture.

The music determines when people rise from their seats, when someone crosses the room to greet an elder, when currency is sprayed on performers and other party goers, and when the dance floor becomes unavoidable. At an African party, the question is not whether music matters. The question is which music, and why.

Juju music took shape in Lagos in the 1920s, drawing from Yoruba percussion traditions while adapting guitar techniques introduced through colonial contact. By the time King Sunny Ade carried it onto international stages in the 1980s, the genre was already deeply embedded in Yoruba social life: weddings, chieftaincy ceremonies, and naming celebrations. The talking drum converses with layered guitars while praise singers call out family names and lineages.

At a party, juju creates room for collective movement. An elder rises slowly to acknowledge the music. A relative steps forward to spray money. The band responds by weaving the family’s name into the rhythm. Juju does not force attention; it rewards presence.

Fuji carries a different kind of energy. Its roots lie in were, the devotional music sung in the early hours during Ramadan. In the 1970s, Sikiru Ayinde Barrister expanded that form into a full genre built around layered percussion and urgent vocals. Fuji pushes forward. The drums gather momentum, the lead voice rides above them, and the crowd responds.

Where juju maintains ceremony, fuji often signals the point when formality begins to loosen. The dance floor fills faster, the singing grows louder, and allegiances emerge. Ask a room whether K1 De Ultimate or Adewale Ayuba better represents the tradition and the conversation will quickly turn lively. The debate itself becomes part of the culture surrounding the music.

Highlife travelled across the West African coast before finding particularly strong expression in Igbo musical circles. By the 1960s and 70s, artists such as Oliver De Coque, Osita Osadebe, and Celestine Ukwu had developed a style built on intricate guitar patterns and reflective storytelling.

Highlife carries memory easily. A song that has not been heard in decades can suddenly return the moment the guitar line begins. The words come back almost involuntarily. This is often the music that accompanies the arrival of food, the recognition of elders, or the quiet moment when a room settles into shared familiarity. It is not nostalgic in a sentimental sense. It is the past made usable in the present.

Beyond these widely recognized genres are others whose reach may be more regional but whose power within their communities is complete. Inguasa music from the northern part of Nigeria is one example. Built around tight call-and-response structures and direct rhythmic patterns, it fills gatherings with collective participation. Everyone understands the cues. Everyone knows when to answer.

Across their differences, these genres share an important characteristic: they were never designed for solitary listening. They function as social technologies. They organize people in space, signal when to move closer, when to greet someone properly, and when to celebrate a person’s place in the room.

In the diaspora, the music takes on additional work. A playlist that moves from highlife to fuji to juju at a party in London, Houston, or Toronto becomes more than entertainment. It becomes orientation. It tells people where they come from and reminds them who they intend to remain.

Contemporary sounds now sit comfortably within this structure. Afrobeats records may open the night, drawing younger guests to the dance floor. Yet as the hours pass, the older rhythms often return. The guitars stretch out, the talking drum answers again, and the room settles into a familiar pattern of celebration.

The aso-ebi coordinates the gathering visually. The party jollof rice sustains it. But the music transforms the event into something larger than a simple meeting of people.

A good party, after all, is a form of argument. It says that a community exists, that its memory remains intact, and that celebration is one of the ways it continues to recognize itself.

That is what the music is doing. It is not background. It never was.

The Music That Makes the Party

It was almost three o'clock, two hours after the final bell had rung at D Lord's Nursery and Primary School, Ladilak, yet the school was far from quiet. Echoes of percussion drifted from the red, dusty courtyard through the empty classrooms. David, Michael, Darasimi, and six other pupils remained. Sweat tracing lines down their faces and soaking through their uniform shirts, they kept rehearsing in a place that should long have fallen silent.

The answer lies not just in dedication, but in an initiative that had quietly taken root inside this humble school in Ladilak, Shomolu, Lagos. Through the Foster Program by African Music Library, the pupils were being introduced to traditional African percussion instruments — the gangan, omele bata, omele gangan, and the shekere. However, the program focused not only on learning African music but also on thinking, focus, feeling, and a sense of belonging.

According to research, the benefits of music education to young children are not limited to playing the instrument or singing, but are comprehensive. Studies have shown that learning music enhances a child's cognitive development, academic performance, and emotional well-being.  It also fosters creativity, builds confidence through performance, strengthens social skills via collaboration, and helps manage stress.

What made the courtyard scene remarkable was the resilience and dedication of the pupils as they explored various instruments. Interestingly, the only girl among the young learners, Darasimi, demonstrated that all a young girl needs is an opportunity; the rest will follow. She began her journey on the shekere before the gangan and then quietly mastering the omele gangan - the ako (male) and the abo (female). The progression and finding the best fit has said everything about her determination and nothing at all about the old assumption that percussion was a boy's domain. She was dismantling that notion one beat at a time, performing with the same confidence as any of her classmates, and in doing so, giving the girls watching from the periphery something they had not expected to find in a music lesson: a mirror.

The impact extended beyond music. The head teacher, Mr. Fred, has watched the transformation of his pupils with quiet awe. The discipline of learning rhythms, it turned out, does not stay in the courtyard. Rhythm had followed the pupils back into their studies. The children were more focused in class, he noted — more attentive, quicker to recall, steadier in their concentration. Even their self-confidence has improved. David, the young talking drummer, said, "I used to be shy," he said, "but now I am no longer shy." Eight words. An entire education.

Reflecting on what was happening under that afternoon sun in Ladilak, this is not a rehearsal for a performance, but the slower, less visible rehearsal for life for these pupils. These children were learning that African music is not just entertainment. It serves as a vehicle for cultural pride, cognitive growth, and the kind of self-assurance that no textbook alone can provide. With the right rhythm, the right guidance, and the right opportunity, they were discovering what they were capable of.

The beat, it turns out, had never been just a beat.

Transforming Lives through Music Education

In African societies, music and dress have long been linked expressions of culture. Before recording studios and streaming platforms, music was heard mainly in communal spaces such as festivals, rituals, markets, and royal courts. In these settings, clothing was not only decorative. It communicated identity, status, spirituality, and the purpose of the performance. The relationship between dressing and African music is therefore historical and rooted in cultural practice.

Across the continent, musical performance has often included ceremonial dress. In many West African traditions, musicians and dancers appear in clothing made for ritual events. Among the Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria, the costumes worn in the Egungun masquerade represent ancestral spirits returning to the community. As the masquerader dances to the rhythms of talking drums, the layered fabrics move with the performer, making rhythm visible. In this context, clothing functions as part of the performance and connects music with spiritual expression.

In other parts of West Africa, hereditary musicians known as griots also maintain recognizable forms of dress linked to their cultural role. Performers associated with instruments such as the Kora often appear in robes or embroidered garments that reflect lineage and social standing. Musicians such as Toumani Diabaté have carried these traditions into concerts around the world, where the traditional clothing presentation accompanies the sound of the instrument.

Movement has always been central to African musical expression, and clothing often evolved to support that movement. Beaded skirts, ankle rattles, shells, and layered fabrics were added to costumes to produce sound or highlight motion during dance. In parts of East Africa, beadwork worn by dancers moves in rhythm with the body, adding a visual element to percussion. In Southern Africa, traditional Zulu dance attire—including animal skins and beadwork—emphasizes the strong footwork that accompanies ceremonial music.

As African music entered the recording era in the twentieth century, the connection between dress and musical identity remained visible. In Ghana and Nigeria during the 1950s and 1960s, highlife musicians presented an image of urban sophistication. Artists such as E.T. Mensah often performed in suits, reflecting the nightclub culture of cities like Accra and Lagos. The clothing matched the polished sound of highlife orchestras and their urban audience.

In Nigeria, Fela Kuti used clothing to reinforce the political and cultural message of his music. He often rejected Western formal wear, appearing on stage bare-chested. His appearance reflected the Afrocentric ideas that shaped Afrobeat and signaled resistance to colonial cultural influence.

In South Africa, dress also became part of musical identity on international stages. Singer and activist Miriam Makeba frequently wore African gowns and headwraps while performing abroad. Her clothing helped present African culture with dignity and visibility during a time when the country faced international attention over apartheid.

In Central Africa, the relationship between music and fashion developed in a different direction. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the fashion movement known as La Sape grew alongside the popularity of Congolese rumba. Musicians such as Papa Wemba became known for wearing designer suits and carefully coordinated outfits on and off stage. In this case, clothing expressed style, identity, and social aspiration within urban culture.

In North Africa, artists have also combined music with elements of traditional dress. Algerian rai singer Khaled often mixes modern stage clothing with garments that reflect regional culture, mirroring the blend of traditional and contemporary elements found in rai music.

In contemporary African music, clothing remains part of artistic identity. Nigerian artist Burna Boy often appears in outfits that combine African fabrics with global streetwear. Beninese singer Angélique Kidjo regularly performs in African textiles while touring internationally. In East Africa, Diamond Platnumz blends urban fashion with regional influences that reflect youth culture around Bongo Flava. Artists such as Yemi Alade and Sho Madjozi also incorporate traditional hairstyles, fabrics, and design elements into performances and music videos.

Today, audiences often express music through music videos and social media. Because of this, clothing has become part of how artists present their identity and communicate with audiences. Distinct fashion choices can signal culture, genre, or artistic vision even before the music begins.

From ritual masquerades and court performances to nightclubs, concert halls, and digital platforms, the link between dressing and African music has remained consistent. Clothing supports movement, signals identity, and adds meaning to performance. African music has therefore always been both an auditory and visual experience, where sound and dress work together to express culture and history.

Every year on International Women’s Day, the world marks the achievements and creativity of women across industries. In African music, women have long been innovators, storytellers, archivists, and cultural ambassadors. Their voices have shaped the sounds of the continent and influenced music beyond it.

From traditional performance circles to global stages, African women have preserved and advanced musical traditions. Long before recording studios and streaming platforms, women played a key role in sustaining Africa’s musical heritage. One example is Bikutsi, a dance and music tradition among the Beti people of Cameroon that, before the 1960s, was performed largely by women. They gathered in the evenings after work to sing, dance, and share experiences. In Nigeria, Waka music developed from Yoruba folklore and Islamic musical influences and gained prominence through performers such as Batile Alake in the 1950s.

Oral traditions function as a cultural archive. Women’s songs record community values, social change, challenges, and collective memory. The rhythms, melodies, instruments, and storytelling found in these performances contribute to Africa’s musical identity. As African societies evolved and music began to reach broader audiences through radio and recordings, artists such as Evi Edna Ogholi, Brenda Fassie, and Onyeka Onwenu emerged as pioneers who carried these traditions into new spaces.
