BioWateule is a Tanzanian Hip Hop collective that reshaped Bongo Flava in the early 2000s. Formed in 1999 under the guidance of producer P-Funk Majani at Bongo Records, the group became a launchpad for East Africa’s standout lyricists, including Jay Moe, Jaffarai, and Solo Thang. Their name, Swahili for "The Chosen Ones," reflected their elite status in Dar es Salaam’s underground.
The group gained major recognition with their 2002 track "Msela," which reclaimed a formerly derogatory term to celebrate the resilience and street-smarts of Tanzanian youth. By combining clever Swahili wordplay with cinematic production, Wateule turned rap into a distinctly local movement. Though members later pursued solo careers, the group’s influence remains a foundation of the "Golden Era," shaping modern Tanzanian Hip Hop.
